Charles (Chuck) DeLancey

Obituary for Charles Ruben DeLancey

Charles “Chuck” Ruben DeLancey, 76, of Fletcher, NC, passed away on January 31, 2020.

Born on May 2, 1943 in St. Louis, Missouri, he was the son of the late Isabel Magdeline DeLancey and Charles Buser DeLancey. Chuck served in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1972. He retired from Xerox after 37 years as a Service Program Planning Manager. Chuck went on to work for the Pruitt Corporation for 7 years, where he retired a second time as a Facilities Coordinator.

Chuck loved spending time with his family. He was an avid golfer, boater, history buff, “fixer of all things,” and notorious chatterbox.

In addition to his parents, Chuck was preceded in death by his sibling Katherine Welch.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 48 years, Joan Marie DeLancey, are his son, Patrick Donald DeLancey and wife Brandi; daughter, Kara Lynn DeLancey and significant other Michael Cyrolies; grandchildren Aiden DeLancey, and Asher DeLancey; sister Janet Clark; and many nieces and nephews.

We would like to give our sincerest gratitude to the staff at Pardee Hospital as well as all of the medical professionals that helped Chuck throughout his long and difficult journey. The family has designated the nonprofit organization, Stand Up To Cancer (standup2cancer.org), for memorial contributions.

The family will be holding a private memorial service at a later date.

Chuck and I were the best of friends growing up in Oxon Hill, Maryland. I believe I first met Chuck (Chuckie) when he was 5 and I was six. He had moved next door and all of a sudden I heard someone say "hey boy" and that was the beginning of a great friendship. We spent many hours playing in the woods, building forts, playing cowboys and outlaws, endlessly riding trikes, then bikes and doing our own repairs, patching tires and riding those bikes to the Oxon hill crossroads to Berry's store, Clarks market or buying BB's at Perrygo's Hardware. We would fly kites in the fields behind our houses and add so much string you could barely see the kite in the air. We had a great time building forts in the sandbox and setting up toy soldiers and shooting bb guns at each others forts, and shooting catalpa worms off the catalpa tree leaves with our bb guns. We both got 22 rifles one year for Christmas. We had such a great time together!! Going trick or treating at Halloween was always so much fun.

I have fond memories of Chuck's Mom and Dad and how kool I thought his Dad's 1950 bulletnose Studebaker was!! Have great memories of his Uncle Comry and cousin Bonnie too!

It was a great time to grow up and I will always treasure his friendship during that time and the memories we shared.

My love goes out to his Wife Joan and all of the kids and grandkids. We are so sorry for your loss but know the wonderful memories will always be with you.

Attached a couiple of pics of us as kids!

Sending my sympathy to Chuck's family and friends. We were neighbors on Livingston Rd., and I remember when he worked at the ESSO Station on the corner by the entrance to Southlawn. He was always a good friend, and classmate.
