Joel H. Megonigal
AUGUST 1, 1943 – AUGUST 12, 2021
Joel Megonigal was born on August 1, 1943 in Washington DC to Clifford and Ruth (Carlson) Megonigal. He was the oldest of three children, and grew up in Oxon Hill, Maryland. Joel met his wife, Sarah, at the University of Maryland when they were both students there, and they were married in Silver Spring, MD on August 20, 1966. Joel and Sarah had two sons, Joel, Jr. (“Jay”) and Russell.
Two of Joel’s proudest accomplishments were receiving his BS in accounting (at age 50+!) from the University of Maryland, and earning his private pilot’s license and flying solo from Freeway Airport. His career was as a budget analyst for the federal government at the Washington Navy Yard. He also served as church treasurer for many years at Lanham United Methodist Church where he was a long time member.
Joel leaves behind his brother Harold Megonigal, of Simpsonville, SC, sister Carol Marion, of Charlotte, NC, and seven nieces and nephews in Maine, North Carolina and South Carolina. His son Russell’s family includes wife Lauren and grandchildren Carter and Lila, who live in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Joel especially enjoyed yearly vacations with his family on the Outer Banks of North Carolina

Sorry to hear of the passing of Joel. My condolences to those who are here to mourn him. Joel was in many of my classes as we went year by year through Oxon Hill. I remember him as a soft spoken, kind person, helpful and respectful to all he interacted with. His presence made Oxon Hill High School a nicer place to be.
