Sarah Littlefeather Obituary

Sarah Littlefeather
Sarah Littlefeather

Sarah Littlefeather (Nancy Jane Barkley), 66, of West Danville, Vt., passed away quietly at the intensive care unit of Fletcher Allen Hospital of the University of Vermont Medical School, Burlington, Vt., in the early-morning hours of May 1, 2010, from complications secondary to pneumonia.

Sarah was born on Oct. 15, 1943, to Donald S. Barkley and Mildred M. (Terbush) Barkley in the town of Newburgh, N.Y. (Orange County). Sarah experienced progressive physical disabilities in her later life that led her to become a strong advocate for disabled adults and for the importance of supporting them in independent living as much as possible. She served on several local and state boards in Vermont, including working as an information and referral specialist and later occasional consultant to the Vermont Center for Independent Living. She was also a member of the Buddhist community and periodically worked at and utilized the services of Karmé Chöling-Shambhala Meditation Center in Barnet, Vt.

During her childhood, she was educated in various schools in New York, Florida, Texas and Maryland, and graduated from Oxon Hill High School in Maryland. She subsequently attended nursing school at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md., but left to marry Richard Friedman of Baltimore, Md. She and Richard had two daughters, Kathy and Beth, but later divorced. Sarah subsequently had a third daughter, Molly, with Victor Schoenberg, and was later briefly married to Steve Brown. Sarah lived her adult life in a variety of communities throughout the U.S., including most recently West Danville, Vt., and earlier Baltimore, Md., Boulder, Colo., Santa Barbara, Calif., Elizabethtown, N.Y., and Fostertown, N.Y.

She had wide-ranging interests, including the visual arts (painting and pottery), disability services, politics, biology and medicine and religion, particularly Buddhism and Native American spirituality, among other interests. An avid reader, she loved mysteries, poetry and books dealing with spirituality and religion. She was a devoted listener of Vermont Public Radio and viewer of C-Span and readily engaged in passionate discussions concerning contemporary political issues.

She is survived by her older sister, Judyth (Barkley) Martin and husband Malcolm of Elizabethtown, N.Y.; and her younger brothers Don G. Barkley and companion Carol Ericsson of Naples, Fla., and Russell A. Barkley, Ph.D., and wife Patricia of Mount Pleasant, S.C., as well as her daughters Kathy (Friedman) Byman and husband Michael of Falls Church, Va., Beth (Friedman) Wyman of Craig, Colo., and Molly (Barkley) Sacamano and husband Andrew of Baltimore, Md. She was privileged to have five grandchildren: Peter and Joseph Byman of Falls Church, Va., Pearl Wyman of Craig, Colo., and Julian and Grace Bishop of Denver, Colo.

She is predeceased by her mother and father and younger brother, Ronald F. Barkley.

At the family's request, there will be no calling hours. Her life will be celebrated at a memorial service Sunday, May 9, 2010, at 1:30 p.m. at Karmé Chöling-Shambhala Meditation Center in Barnet, Vt.

In lieu of flowers, her family requests that donations be made to the Vermont Center for Independent Living, 11 East State St., Montpelier, VT 05602-3008.

I just learned, by chance, of her passing. I have never forgotten her. Her life, it seems, was as beautiful, through her choices, as was she. Honeysuckle forever
