Obituary

Mary Anita Kahler, age 73, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 19, 2017, at Duke Raleigh Hospital. She was born on September 2, 1943, in Charlotte to Albert and Evelyn (Nash) Griffin and was the oldest of three sisters. She graduated from Strayer College in Washington D.C. in 1962, and later attended Prince George Community College in Largo, MD, where she earned an AA degree and her Health Information Technologist Certification in 1987. After retiring from MedCost LLC in Winston-Salem in 2006, she found a new career she loved when she began teaching part time at Forsyth Technical Community College. As a believer in continuing education, in 2011 she graduated AHIMA from the Academy for ICD-10CM trainers. With her move to Swansboro that same year, she continued her teaching career when she became a full time instructor in Medical Office Administration at Coastal Carolina Community College. Her love for the college faculty, staff, and students was boundless and she was working full time until her recent illness. Mary Anita is survived by her mother and her beloved husband of 25 years, Al Kahler; sons, Steve Bivens (Susan), and Scott Bivens (Holly); 3 grandchildren, Nikki, Garrett, and Chase; a special nephew, David Topper (Amy Beth) and their daughter, Annabella; and a sister, Harriett Griffin. Mary Anita was preceded in death by her father and her sister, Susan Kalwa. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, April 30, at 6:00 p.m. at Jones Funeral Home in Swansboro. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Coastal Carolina Community College Foundation, Mary Kahler Scholarship.

Mary and I were friends on Facebook.  Less than 2 weeks earlier she posted this comment "Got good report from Vidant today...no new cancer....but I do appear to have pneumonia so am on drugs for at least a week.  We can take care of pneumonia."  May God comfort her family and friends. Rip Mary.

I seem to remember her teaching us all to do a variation of the Charlston, it had something to do with the school play.  She was so enthusiastic we couldn't help but join in.  It was silly, but so much fun!  She will be missed.
